Spitfire Lore

Spitfires are a relatively peaceful creature. Their size is rather small, only the size of an average human’s hand, and they are not known to be aggressive unless provoked with hostile intent. Hatched from tiny eggs, the spitfire tend to mature within a year, and live for approximately six years in total.

Vibrant Appearance. The spitfire has a distinctive orange colour to its tough skin, easily spotted in most underground caves as it clings to walls and stalactites. Unlike most other lizards, rather than using claws, the spitfire utilizes its body heat to excrete a mild adhesive, allowing it to stick to surfaces. The claws of the spitfire are vestigial, and serve only a purpose when dealing with other aggressive males of its own species.  It has four small red eyes at the front of its head, and a long spiny tail to help balance itself when sticking to surfaces.

Arctic Adaption. The spitfire thrives in frigid environments. It has adapted with its extremely insulated skin, as well as its ability to rapidly generate its own body heat. This allows it to survive in the worst arctic conditions, and also acts as its main method of acquiring food. Spitfires predominantly are found within cave systems, and are generally found in small groups – known as a conflagration. The spitfires are omnivorous creatures, living and hunting together, allowing them to singularly envelop and cook insects, or work together and overwhelm larger prey. They can also work together to scavenge from dead or decaying creatures, and also thawing the ice off of frozen carcasses. They reduce the meat and bone to an ash that they can lick up for sustenance. They can also consume moss and other fungi for food within the region. They have been spotted outside of underground dwellings, but usually to migrate to other caves, to find frozen carcasses, or to meet new groups of spitfire to mate with.

Playful Billowers. They have been noted to be a rather social, inquisitive creature, and as such are perfect for those looking for a familiar in arctic conditions. They have been observed to create simple smoke patterns by billowing hot air from their mouths, this has been noted to be used within a mating ritual, but further research is required as to whether it is in actuality a basic form of communication.

Variant: Spitfire Familiar

A spitfire can be convinced into acting as a familiar to spell casters, and is a very common familiar to people who live in these harsh climates. This is typically done with offerings of food, baubles, and continual exposure.

Familiar. The spitfire can serve another creature as a familiar, forming a magical bond with that willing companion. While the two are bonded, the companion gains darkvision out to 60 feet, if the companion already has darkvision it is extended out an additional 60 feet. While the spitfire is within 10 feet of the companion, the companion shares the spitfires cold resistance and warm body trait.
