You are an expert in ranged combat, and can make accurate shots from any distance. You gain the following benefits:

  • You can attack at long range without disadvantage on your ranged weapon attack rolls.
  • Your ranged weapon attacks ignore all cover except full cover.
  • While you are prone, you are not disadvantages on your ranged attack rolls.

Sharpshooter is not a bad feat. Actually, it’s very good. It’s too good. This feat is designed as part of an effort to remove the -5/+10 mechanic from feats. The damage gained from these feats represent a huge amount of single target burst damage, making them a requirement to get as quickly as possible.

This modified version makes the archer feel more like a sniper, by allowing them to fall prone to make ranged attack rolls, much like a sniper would. This makes them deadly when they’re left alone and hard to hit with ranged attacks, but doesn’t provide a huge damage increase.

Try shooting a bow while prone. Spoiler: it wont work. You will only hurt yourself and/or your equipment. Crossbows are another matter entirely, so this could work with them.
Also, maybe don't let the Archer in the team ignore three-quarters cover from level one if they picked variant human. Other than that, I agree with the sniper vibes this gives off. You could also incorporate some of the Archery fighting style's effects, and help make shots more reliable by giving a +2 to ATK rolls but not to damage rolls .
