Unlicensed Energy Devices

Battery. A battery is a very useful device, capable of holding magical energy. Each battery is made with a series of connected cells that hold the energy. These cells can be released individually as needed by devices or terminals. They can be charged at any well on a fragment, station, or vessel (if available). A battery recovers 1 cell every minute while charging at a well, and it costs 2 credits per minute to charge a battery.

A small battery fits easily in one hand, and is no larger than a lighter. A medium battery can be held in one hand and is similar to a book in size. Lastly, a large battery requires two hands to hold and is similar in size to a toaster.

Memory Strand. A memory strand is a small reinforced black tube, around 4 inches long and a quarter inch thick. The weight of this strand is minimal on it’s own, though 100 of these together weigh one pound. A DC 10 Destruction roll is required to break the tube, destroying all the data on the strand. The memory strand allows you to store up to it’s capacity of neurons (nu) within it. Memory strands weigh a quarter pound each and come in four sizes:

  • Micro Strand’s cost 1 credit for 4 and has a neuron capacity of 25.
  • Quarter Strand’s cost 2 credits and has a neuron capacity of 250.
  • Demi Strand’s cost 6 credits and has a neuron capacity of 500.
  • Full Strand’s cost 15 credits and has a neuron capacity of 1000.
  • Mega Strand’s cost 60 credits and has a neuron capacity of 2000.

Each memory strand can be woven together to create a memory chain, allowing for larger files, if needed, however doing so requires technical expertise. This chain does not count as a single strand when determining the memory strand capacity of items, or the weight of a strand. When forming a memory chain, you must make a Database skill roll with a DC equal to 5 + the number of strands in the chain (excluding the chain being added) up to a maximum of 25. On a success, the memory strand is woven into the chain. You can only weave 1 memory strand into a chain at a time. This skill roll is made with disadvantage unless you have a technical II license. If you fail the skill roll to create a chain of memory strands, the memory strands you were attempting to chain together are destroyed. This entire process takes 15 minutes regardless on if it succeeds or fails.

All files stored on a memory strand are measured in nu. When determining the size of a single file, you can use the following table.

Type of FileNeurons (nu)

Text (1 page)1
Spreadsheet (1 page)1
Programming (100 lines)1

1For experiential data files that involve more than one sense, you combine the nu cost for each sense used in the file and add it to the total.
